For that, it works. I can record 4 separate mics, assigned to separate channels.
Build quality is fine. The preamps sound OK … certainly not as good as the RME Babyface (one of the first things I checked out of curiosity). The warmth some have reported is a.k.a. dullness or lacking air. It is however, pretty slight (listening on my Sennheiser HD800 open-back headphones). It is not offensive and sure, I could say warmth if I was being nice.
There is noise, and it’s a little gurgly. Not overt, but certainly more than the RME, which is a smooth sheen of noise when cranked.
Compared to the RME, the amount of gain is paltry. The RME at 60% is louder and fuller than the Allen and Heath at 90%. So the noise is higher in actual use. NOT horrible, but definitely noticeable.
However the reason I’m returning this is that the EQ and yes, even the hi-pass filter switch is unusable. That is to say, as I have it situated, on channels 1 & 2 (or specifically USB out 1,2), there is no way to activate EQ/hi pass to the outputs 1,2. So two channels of useless knobs (for my purposes).
On channels 3/4 (or 1 and 2, if you prefer) one can send to USB output 3/4 with EQ and lo cut (high pass) if you route them one to FX and one to Aux. However, in doing this the one to Aux can also be heard in the mix, which messed it up for overdubbing.
There are no mutes or solos. No inserts. I know, I know .. get what you pay for, etc. No, I wasn’t buying it specifically for the EQ, but it would have been nice to have from time to time, and certainly the high pass! Then the space they take up would have made some sense.
Well, in this case I would be paying for it for longer, as its form and footprint does not present any usefulness to me, thereby preventing me from using the space it is occupying in a more comfortable/useful manner.
