JVC has just announced three new 4K-capable handheld camcorders. Dubbed 4KCAM, the new line makes 4K Ultra HD recording accessible to a wide range of users, from independent cinematographers and students, to corporate and live event production teams. The new camcorders come in three similar form factors, with feature sets geared toward different user groups. The GY-LS300 is a Super 35mm camcorder with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, the GY-HM200 is a full-featured camcorder with built-in 12x zoom lens with live HD streaming support, and the GY-HM170 brings 4K Ultra HD recording and professional features in a compact, versatile package.
The GY-LS300 is equipped with a 4K Super 35mm CMOS sensor and utilizes a Micro Four Thirds lens mount that accepts a wide range of lenses using readily available third-party adapters. This gives filmmakers the ability to use a large variety of lenses, from inexpensive DSLR lenses to professional cinema lenses. When used with native MFT, Super 16, or other lenses that don¡¯t fully cover the Super 35mm image sensor, JVC¡¯s Variable Scan Mapping feature scales the image to maintain the native angle of view of the lens.

The GY-HM200 comes in a more traditional camcorder form and combines professional features and performance for a variety of applications. It features a 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor and is equipped with a 12x zoom lens with optical image stabilization and 24x dynamic zoom in HD mode. Both the GY-LS300 and GY-HM200 record Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) resolution video at 24/30p, and 4:2:2 Full HD 1080p video from 24p to 60p. Other professional features the two camcorders share include dual XLR audio inputs with built-in phantom power, an integrated handle with hot shoe and dedicated microphone mount, and SDI and HDMI video outputs.
When equipped with an optional Wi-Fi or 4G LTE modem, the GY-LS300 and GY-HM200 allow you to deliver a live video stream in the field directly from the camera. Through their dual codec support, the camcorders can stream live HD video to hardware decoders, Ustream, Wowza streaming engines, and ProHD Broadcaster servers powered by Zixi, while simultaneously recording video internally to SDHC/SDXC media cards. A variety of streaming protocols, including RTMP, allows delivery to popular streaming websites and content delivery networks (CDN). Zixi’s Advanced Streaming Technology (AST) provides content-aware error correction and bandwidth shaping, while JVC’s Streamconfidence delivers real-time feedback of LTE and streaming status in the viewfinder.

The third model announced is a cost-effective option for users looking to get into 4K Ultra HD recording, or supplement their existing 4K Ultra HD camera package. While small in size, the GY-HM170 still packs the controls and video settings required for professional use. It records 4K Ultra HD video as edit-friendly H.264 files, and can record HD and SD footage in a variety of resolutions and frame rates, depending on your needs. Additional features include a 12x optical zoom lens, two ND filters, a built-in stereo microphone and 3.5mm audio input, and live 4K Ultra HD output over HDMI.
All three cameras feature dual SDHC/SDXC card slots for dual, backup, and continuous recording, as well as 3.5¡± LCD screens and 1.56MP viewfinders with smart focus assist, and two-channel audio recording. With the new 4KCAM line, JVC introduces a compelling range of 4K Ultra HD capable cameras with professional features designed to meet the varying needs of the modern video professional.
