Featuring a retro look inspired by the vintage CM 51/3 mic and top-shelf internals resulting from extensive development, the gray Schoeps V4 U is a cardioid studio condenser microphone that combines the transparency of small-diaphragm capsule architecture with the narrowed high-frequency polar response of a large-diaphragm mic. The result is a premier transducer that delivers pleasing tonality (on- and off-axis) for sources ranging from vocals to an array of acoustic instruments. With a priority on clarity and clean sound, the V4 U utilizes a transformerless output stage devoid of coupling capacitors. Extraneous handling noise is reduced by the capsule’s internal elastic suspension, and the RFI filter and gapless shielding yield excellent resistance to interference. The capsule head can be tilted ¡À20 degrees to ensure optimal positioning with ease. The V4 U is compatible with stand clamps and shockmounts (available separately).GeneralSmall-diaphragm capsule architecture with a beveled collar for controlling the polar responseWarm, clear sonic character with a smoothly rolled-off diffuse-field responseCapsule head with an adjustable tilt angleOptimal on-axis frequency response featuring a mild high-frequency liftSmooth polar response; carefully controlled narrowing of the pattern at high frequenciesDiffuse-field response parallel to the 0¡ã response, with a gentle roll-off at high frequenciesOffers a high maximum sound-pressure levelCapsuleA 33mm beveled collar causes the capsule’s directivity to increase steadily and smoothly at high frequencies, as in a large-diaphragm microphoneThe acoustic qualities of a small-diaphragm capsule like smooth frequency and polar response are maintainedThe capsule is elastically suspended internally to reduce handling noise and other solid-borne soundElectronicsBridge-type balanced-output circuitMaximum sound pressure level of 144 dB SPL, corresponding to an output level of 13 dBV (4.8V)Output stage is transformerless and free of coupling capacitorsThe resulting output impedance is low and constant with frequency, while the symmetry is highSymmetrical, balanced output; the entire audio circuit is symmetrical from the output of the FET onwardHigh immunity to interference, with gapless shielding and a modern RFI filter at the output; good electromagnetic compatibilityRequires 48V phantom power from a preamp connected to the XLR 3-pin output
