How to Record Pro-Quality Vocals in an Untreated Room: The $20 Duvet Trick

Description: Stop spending thousands on acoustic treatment. Learn the simple, proven method to record incredibly dry, professional vocals at home using just a thick duvet and a mic stand.

Alright, there are already a million great videos and articles on this topic, but the question keeps popping up everywhere. So, I (Cristiano Sadun) decided to write a concise article to put the matter to rest as quickly as possible.

I didn’t invent this trick; I learned it from others. But I can guarantee it works because I’ve used it myself on countless live recording sessions.

As a bonus, this method also works for recording most acoustic guitar tracks, and I’ll explain precisely why at the end.

I’m assuming you already know the basics of setting up your gear to record a vocal track (audio interface, cables, microphone, headphones, etc.), so I’ll focus strictly on how to capture a great-sounding vocal take.

(I) Can I Really Record a Truly Great Vocal Track at Home?

If you are a truly great singer, the answer is yes.

(II) Is It Expensive or Difficult?

Not at all. You just need a cheap, thick duvet and a spare microphone stand with a boom arm to hold it up.

(III) So, What Do I Do?

    • Use a cardioid microphone. Not your phone’s mic, as those are typically omnidirectional.
    • Get a thick duvet. Yes, the one from your bedroom will work perfectly.
    • Set up your recording microphone, pop filter, etc., on its stand as usual.
    • Take a second mic stand, extend it to its maximum height, and position its boom arm in a “T” shape. Place this stand behind the microphone and the singer—not in front, but behind. The duvet should sit about 50 cm (20 inches) behind you (or the singer), leaving just enough room to stand comfortably. Also, ensure there’s about 50 cm (20 inches) of space between the duvet and the wall behind it.
    • A crucial tip: never record vocals in a tiled room! (Translator’s note: Tiled walls create intense sound reflections that can severely color the sound captured by the microphone.)

    • Put on your monitoring headphones and move the entire setup around the room until what you hear in the cans sounds good to you.
    • This is also an excellent moment to learn that microphone placement is just as crucial as—if not more crucial than—the microphone itself.
    • Nowadays, nearly all modern microphones can do a decent job—at least passably so. That cheap condenser mic you bought because you couldn’t afford a better one (yes, I’m looking at you, Behringer). Or that knockoff dynamic mic modeled after a 58 (Translator’s note: referring to the Shure SM58), which you bought because even a Behringer was out of reach. Yes, these mics might be noisy, overly hyped, and have uneven frequency responses, but you can still record with them. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for many of the people using them—but that’s a story for this blog’s existence. (Smile)
    • Hit record.
    • If you really want to go the extra mile (or you’re stuck with a tiled room), you can hang additional duvets on the sides (requiring two more mic stands).

(IV) What Is the Single Most Important Factor for a Great Vocal Recording?

The music itself, and the performer’s delivery.

Ninety-nine percent of vocal recording comes down to the music, the performance, and the recording environment—not the gear. In that exact order. Of that 99%, the music and performance make up 90%. And that all depends on you!

Now go and try it; that’s all you truly need to know. But if you’re interested in the nitty-gritty, here’s one final question and answer…

(V) But This Looks Unprofessional! How Can It Be So Simple?

It’s true, it doesn’t look professional.

It’s not an Instagram-worthy setup (maybe TikTok, though). A permanent, studio-grade installation would certainly be better and much easier on the eyes. But honestly, if you had the means to equip a permanent studio space, you probably wouldn’t be reading this article anyway.

So, yes, the duvet looks unprofessional. But in audio, looks don’t matter. After all, nobody listens with their eyes.

What that duvet does is convert a 2-square-meter area of your room into an acoustically pleasant zone with fewer reflections and a touch of diffuse reverb. And those crucial 2 square meters are precisely where you place the microphone. In other words, it accomplishes essentially the same thing as a professional studio recording because it fundamentally does what a professional studio does: creates a good acoustic space. The difference is, this one is temporary and confined to a small section of the room.

(VI) So, How Does It Actually Work?

The reason lies in the fact that vocal frequencies are mostly concentrated in the midrange and upper-midrange bands. These frequencies’ sound waves are relatively directional and have short wavelengths, making it easy to determine their path. By placing absorbent material in that path, you can effectively reduce reflections.

When you sing in an untreated room, your vocal energy first travels toward the microphone (naturally), passes through it, hits the wall you’re facing, and reflects back. Since the microphone is cardioid, it won’t pick up much of that direct reflection (maybe just some side spill).

However, sound energy continues past you, reflects off the wall behind you, and then enters the front of the microphone again. This causes comb filtering or flutter echoes—hollowing out your tone or creating an obnoxious, ringing quality in the high frequencies… These problems cannot be fixed in post-production and instantly scream “amateur production.”

This duvet is, in fact, a highly effective temporary midrange absorber. Placed in that reflection path, it absorbs the energy traveling toward the wall behind you and the energy bouncing back from that wall toward you and the mic—effectively killing most reflections and de-correlating any remaining ones.

Of course, some residual reverberation will remain (mostly from floor-to-ceiling reflections). But because vocal frequencies are primarily directional, the majority of the wave energy propagates on a horizontal plane and hits the strategically placed, amateur-looking duvet, where it gets absorbed.

As always, a reflection filter can handle side reflections. However, its effect on sound still varies depending on the filter’s position relative to the mic and the mic/filter combo’s position within the room. It’s up to you to move things around, listen carefully, and judge what’s optimal.

So, there you have it! No more excuses for bad vocal sounds.

Unless, of course, you insist on recording with your phone…
